I think it's vital that people get a good idea of what to expect when they decide to come to counselling, because it can be quite nerve-wracking when you do something new and you're going to speak to someone totally new about what's going on for you right now. So below is a bit of an explanation of how our sessions will work.

If you have any questions at all about what is available, then feel free to email me or call me to have a chat so you can make an informed decision.

Thistle Counselling offers what is called Person-Centred Counselling on a face to face basis. Person-Centred Counselling is a form of therapy known as non-directive, which means you as a client take the lead in your sessions. As your counsellor, I would use my training to "walk in your shoes" and take the journey with you. This means that you do the talking and I offer the compassion and empathy to support you without taking the lead or re-directing the session.

These sessions are all about YOU. Your feelings, your emotions and your experiences. Person-Centred counselling is just that, centred around you and your journey and this type of counselling gives you the time and freedom to explore any number of thoughts and experiences you might have had or be having.

It can be used for a range of needs and issues from anxiety and depression to bereavement and PTSD and can help clients to unravel and understand more about their issues, the world around them and themselves as an individual and it can help empower, encourage and facilitate self-discovery.

If you want to know more about Person-Centred as a theory or approach, you're always more than welcome to ask.

At first, we have an initial "get to know you session" - this session lasts 50 minutes and gives us an opportunity to learn more about each other so you get to know me as a counsellor and I get to know you and your needs, expectations and goals as a client. We complete a Counselling Contract, which covers a variety of things, including more about you and your experiences, what you'd like to achieve from our sessions, who to contact in an emergency and how confidentiality in our sessions will work. This session gives us a chance to know more about each other so you feel comfortable working with me as I think it's great to get to know someone and be happy to work with them.

Subsequent counselling sessions also last 50 minutes. Usually, people will come to counselling on a weekly or fortnightly basis and use that time to explore their thoughts, feelings, experiences and work towards any goals they might have from coming to counselling. During those sessions, I will listen, reflect and respond to whatever you want to bring during our time together and will provide a safe, non-judgemental and supportive space for you to do that in.

Initial sessions are £20

Counselling sessions are £40

Sessions can be paid in cash at the time of the appointment or by bank transfer in advance of the session.

I understand that circumstances can occur where you are unable to attend your sessions.

In the event you are unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible so the session can be offered to someone else and that we may re-book your session to a more convenient time.

If you cancel your session with 24-48 hours notice, there will be a charge of £20 for the missed session, payable before the start of your next session.

If you cancel your session with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full session amount of £40, payable before the start of your next session.

In both cases of cancellation, invoices will be sent to the address you provide at the start of your sessions.

In the event of lateness, the full session charge will be incurred and in the event you are 15 minutes late or more, the session will not go ahead but you will still be charged.
